Course goals

Please note: the information in the course manual is binding.

Please note: maximum 40 students.

At he end of the course, the student will have acquired:
  1. detailed insight in geochemical processes as observed in coastal marine environments and large seas;
  2. a theoretical background and practical training in various experimental techniques used in geochemical analysis of marine sediment and water samples;
  3. training of research skills and abilty to perform a project independently;
  4. training of reporting and oral presentation skills.

Content

Geochemical processes play a critical role in the functioning of the Earth system. This course focuses on the geochemistry of the coastal marine environment (i.e. sediments and water column of estuaries, continental shelves) and of large nearly landlocked seas (e.g. Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea) and the analytical techniques used to study geochemical processes. The course includes training in laboratory procedures, analytical methods, data analysis and reporting skills.
The topics discussed during the lectures are:
  • Estuarine chemistry
  • Geochemistry (redox) of estuarine and marine sediments
  • Organic matter deposition and preservation
  • Analytical techniques used in geochemistry
  • Stable isotope chemistry
  • Experimental approach and design
The laboratory practical involves the analysis of sediments and seawater from various environments. Each student will write and create and experimental design report from a specific coastal system and give an oral presentation on selected analytical methods used for geochemical analyses.
