Course goals

Please note: the information in the course manual is binding.

The aim of this course is to learn and understand the theoretical basis of seismic wave propagation as well as various methods to determine the structure of the earth interior. In addition, the student will study methods to locate earthquakes and to determine focal mechanisms.

Content

All aspects of seismology will be treated, covering natural and induced seismicity, imaging of the shallow subsurface to the deep interior of the Earth. The lectures will start with the derivation of the wave equations for P- and S-waves. Simple methods of seismology, such as ray theory, travel time equations and reflection and transmission coefficients will then be treated.  Topics of global seismology will include: earthquake localization and the determination of focal mechanisms (examples will include some characteristic and/or recent earthquakes), surface wave and normal mode seismology. A short introduction to computational seismology, the current state-of-the-art in the field, will be provided
