Course goals

Objectives of the course are three-fold:
(1) To train students in the programming language Python (advancing from the basis achieved in the first-year course on Physics and programming, GEO1-1135),
(2) To establish a basis in advanced data analysis, aimed at applications in the earth sciences, and
(3) To train the student in setting up and executing a project in data analysis of selected phenomena in and on the Earth.

Content

This course will be structured in the form of modules. We offer a range of modules that are centred on hands-on work.

These modelling modules can be of various types:
  1. modelling projects focussed on writing and analysing Python code for a specific problem – in principle the topic can come from the full breadth of earth sciences,
  2. projects involving the use (application of/analysis using) an existing code or toolbox of codes,
  3. a module focussed on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. A second common and compulsory module will select and convey necessary elements of the programming language Python, building on an assumed prior knowledge of the basics. This may also include pertinent aspects of data wrangling and analysis including data modelling and statistics.
For projects we will offer topics that are related to published datasets as well as research data collected within the Departments of Physical Geography and of Earth Science.
