After completion of the course, the student is able to:

Understand the basic technological principles underlying ICTs, recent developments in ICTs, and their impacts on economy and society
Understand innovation processes that lead to new digital products and services, both in the private and the public sector
Understand the role of digital platforms and the sharing economy in redefining marketplaces
Evaluate the possibilities and impacts of Artificial Intelligence
Reflect critically on the opportunities and threats of digital technology, and on rationales and government policies in the digital domain
Reflect critically on the impact of digital innovations on the individual, organizations, and society at large
Explain and apply theoretical frameworks relevant to the analysis of digital innovations

Content

In the course Digital Innovation we focus on the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the fundamental transformations of industries and societies. After introducing the nature of ICTs, the first part of the course starts by providing an historical and theoretical introduction to digital innovation from a societal perspective. Specific emphasis is on the economic and social effects of digitalisation. The course then goes into recent developments brought about by digital platforms and artificial intelligence. Throughout the course, attention is paid to the role of digital innovation in specific domains such as health and mobility. In the second part of the course students apply their knowledge to a case in a domain of their choice.
