Course goals

Please note: the information in the course manual is binding.

The student can:
  • independently develop a creative idea and explain this in a motivated fashion;
  • develop a creative idea into a feasible project that connects to their own field, including personal planning and learning objectives;
  • independently explore a subject that is linked to their own field.

Content

Coordination

  • For Earth Sciences students: Dr Elisabeth Addink (E.A.Addink@uu.nl);
  • For Human Geography and Spatial Planning students: Dr Sara Brouwer (s.f.brouwer@uu.nl);
  • For Science & Innovation Management and Global Sustainability Science students: Dr Heleen Mees and Dr Gerbrand Koren (honours.sd@uu.nl).

Content

The Creative Challenge project is an individual course, fully shaped by the student themselves, with ‘creativity’ and ‘challenge’ at its core. The student is free to choose any subject that is linked to the domain of Geosciences. The actions to be taken should be new to a certain extent, hence the challenge. The project can be carried out independently or in a small group. How the creative challenge is organised will be determined for each specific project.

Assessment

The student starts by looking for a supervisor and writing a proposal for the Creative Challenge. This action plan of at most three pages is submitted for approval to the direct supervisor and is then sent to the student’s honours coordinator. Grading of the course is pass/fail.

The following matters are described in the proposal:
  • What are the intended goals of the project?
  • How are these goals related to the personal ambitions of the student?
  • How are these goals to be achieved in practice? The student indicates with whom or where they will carry out the project, and to what extent contact has already been established with the people involved.
  • What knowledge or experience is needed to carry out the project and how will the student obtain this?
  • How is the project related to Geosciences?
  • What is the academic and/or societal relevance?
  • Who will supervise the project? The process should be supervised by one of the staff members within the faculty of Geosciences. If the student is working on a topic that requires an external supervisor, the student may look for an extra supervisor themselves. However, this supervision should always be additional to the supervision and assessment of the regular staff, in order to safeguard both the content-based character and honours character of the course.
  • What is the timeframe? Please include a planning table that contains the main tasks/deliverables. How many hours are involved per task and in which period? This should clearly show that the project can be completed within two periods (7.5 EC = 210 hours).
  • How will the project be reported and assessed (in consultation with the supervisor)? Please include the assessment criteria that you have agreed upon with your supervisor to establish whether the project gets a pass or a fail.
To successfully complete the Creative Challenge, students additionally write a short reflection report in which they reflect on the process of their project. They are requested to present their Creative Challenge, for example at the annual honours conference.
