Course goals
Please note: the information in the course manual is binding.
The student:
- obtains (first) experience doing scientific research.
- obtains an introduction to the different activities;
- tests or develops theoretical concepts with the help of the empirical cycle;
- is trained to independently conduct scientific research;
- writes a brief report;
- learns to work in a project-based manner.
Content
The UhRP is a first exercise in conducting research independently. It offers honours students an introduction to the scientific world and to conducting research. The content of the UhRP differs per department. Grading of the UhRP is pass/fail.
Coordination
- For Earth Sciences students: Dr Elisabeth Addink (E.A.Addink@uu.nl)
- For Human Geography and Spatial Planning students: Dr Sara Brouwer (s.f.brouwer@uu.nl)
- For Global Sustainability Science and Science & Innovation Management students: Dr Gerbrand Koren and Dr Heleen Mees (honours.sd@uu.nl)
Start and completion of the UhRP
The student starts by writing an action plan in consultation with the supervising lecturer. This action plan of at most three pages is first approved by the direct supervisor and then submitted to the student’s honours coordinator. The action plan clarifies the goals and assessment of the UhRP and includes the time planning of the project. In order to complete their UhRP, the student provides a short reflection report on the research process and learning experience. The student is requested to present the UhRP at the annual honours conference.
Earth Sciences
For the duration of their UhRP, the student is part of a research group of lecturer-researchers and PhD candidates. The student preferably assists in PhD research, in which they experience what is involved in scientific research on a daily basis. The student independently collects and analyses data that can preferably be used for the research by the PhD candidate. The student writes a brief summary of the analysis. The UhRP can be started after the research experience of Field work 1, and is carried out in year 2 or 3.
- The UhRP involves the close study of and reporting on a topic of choice, according to the usual rules of the research cycle.
- The choice of topic is free, but the topic should be related to Earth Sciences.
- The student approaches a lecturer themselves or consult with their honours coordinator about the possibilities.
- The student writes a proposal that describes the problem, objective and approach, and includes a time schedule.
Human Geography and Spatial Planning
For the duration of their UhRP, the student takes part in a research group of lecturer-researchers, PhD candidates and master’s students, which is embedded in national and international networks. The UhRP focuses on participating in research that takes place in teams within the research institute. The student is included in the research teams and attends team meetings. They make a small contribution to the research, for example by collecting data in the field, designing questionnaires, collecting and classifying theoretical literature, or accessing and/or updating data. Their efforts should lead to a concrete product.
In short, the student is offered the opportunity to take a peek behind the scenes of scientific research at the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning. That peek is not a non-committal shadowing exercise. Together, the researchers and student develop an elaborate programme that leads to a pre-determined final product. In addition to this final product, the student writes a process report; both the report and the final product are discussed with the researchers.

Global Sustainability Science and Science & Innovation Management
For the duration of their UhRP, the student is part of a research group of lecturer-researchers and PhD candidates. The student preferably assists in PhD research within the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, in which they experience on a daily basis what is involved in scientific research. The student independently collects and analyses data that can preferably be used for the research by the PhD candidate. The student writes a brief scientific report of the analysis. The UhRP can be started after the research experience of the courses Regional Integration Project and Research Skills, and is carried out in year 2 or 3.
- The UhRP involves the close study of and reporting on a topic of choice, according to the usual rules of the research cycle.
- The choice of topic is free, but the topic should be related to one of the tracks of the student’s bachelor’s programme (S&IM, GSS).
- The student approaches a lecturer him/herself or consults with their honours coordinator about the possibilities.
- The student writes a proposal that describes the problem, objective and approach, and includes a research plan. The proposal needs to be approved before they can start.
- The student attends regular group meetings of the PhD students.
