Course goals

Please note: the information in the course manual is binding.

By the end of the course, the student
  • Has gained a general understanding of key ecological concepts and theories
  • Has gained a general understanding of the processes that drive coastal ecosystems
  • Has obtained the ability to critically read, understand and interpret scientific literature
  • Has gained an understanding of how (ecological) research is conducted from data acquisition, analyses to results reporting

Content

Estuaries and coastal waters are among the most biologically productive ecosystems on the planet, critical to the life cycles of fish, other aquatic animals, and the creatures that feed on them. In the Coastal Ecology course you will learn about key ecological concepts and learn how they apply to coastal ecosystems. Emphasis will be on ecological research conducted in temperate coastal ecosystems (tidal flats, salt marshes, coastal dunes, rocky shores, kelp and seagrass). We will dive into the methods that are needed to conduct ecological research focussing on the basics of research question and hypothesis formulation, field data collection, manipulative experiments and (basic) population models. Furthermore, in groups you will perform your own ecological research project using existing data and present you findings in a poster presentation.

You are expected to join (using your own transport) for fieldwork on the tidal flats of the Mokbaai Texel on Friday the 27th of November. If you are unable, please notify us in time.

Development of transferable skills:
  • Ability to work in a team. Students have to distribute tasks and organise the workflow;
  • Data analyses. Students have to perform (statistical) data analyses. You are expected to know the basics of statistics (regression, correlations, factorial analyses).
  • Poster presentation. Present your research in a scientific poster including pitch.
