After completion of the course, the student is able to:
•   give an overview of the concept of sustainable development, its history, and ways to approach it;
•   identify and explain different perspectives on sustainability (e.g. earth systems thinking, economics, decoloniality, governance, transition) and their key concepts;
•   distinguish the contributions from relevant scientific disciplines and integrate these for interdisciplinary approaches to sustainable development;
•   analyze real-world problems from multiple perspectives and understand that the perception of problems and solutions depends on different frames of reference;
•   articulate own positionality in contributing to sustainability and identify the necessary skills to achieve future ambitions for critical, hopeful and actionable ecological transformations.

Content

Perspectives on Sustainable Development (PSD) is the first of the compulsory courses for all students of the Sustainable Development master program. This course aims at i) critically introducing students to the general knowledge and key concepts needed to understand and contribute to the discussions on sustainability and ii) providing an overview of different perspectives on sustainable development to illustrate the complexity of sustainability challenges and of finding and implementing solutions for them. The course starts by elaborating on the concepts and various definitions of sustainable development. We then explore in more detail some of the many different perspectives on sustainability from different disciplines in more detail.

This course is the entry requirement for:
