After completion of this course, you are able to:
  1. Understand the paradigms and logics behind, and applications of various research strategies;
  2. Apply a varied set of strategies and methods of the social sciences;
  3. Develop conceptual models, derived from various research strategies, to analyse and explain issues related with sustainable development from a social science perspective;
  4. Develop appropriate designs for the application of those strategies and methods;
  5. Make an informed judgement about the selection of a particular research method, justifying its selection based on the weighing of evidence;
  6. Critically reflect upon strengths and weaknesses regarding the use of (a combination of) research strategies and methods.

Content

The objective of this course is to offer a toolbox of common research strategies to analyse and evaluate environmental governance and policy processes and outcomes. In order to achieve this objective, students will be offered a brief introduction to:
  1. Qualitative interpretive analysis & coding
  2. Case study analysis
  3. Participatory action research
  4. Impact Assessment
  5. Network analysis
  6. Discourse analysis
  7. Transdisciplinary research
Students will conduct 4 paper assignments to familiarize themselves and practice with these research strategies. The strategies and methods are applicable to sustainability challenges from the local to the global level. In this course the demonstrations of the applications of these strategies will be done primarily with cases of local sustainability governance (from policies on nature based solutions in European cities, to NGO support in rural communities in India, to name some examples).
