Course goals

Please note: the information in the course manual is binding.

Industrial activities are a source of pressure on the natural environment in the form of resource consumption, waste generation, and pollutant emissions into the atmosphere and water ecosystems. Companies’ global operations and supply chains also raise a number of social issues, e.g. unfair or hazardous working condition. Yet, companies are increasingly expected to change the way they do business and play a key role in the transition towards more sustainable patterns of production and consumption.

The overall aim of this course is to help students develop a critical understanding of the integration of corporate sustainability (CS) into business practices and the management of organisational change.

After completion of the course, the student is able to:
1. Describe and apply different theoretical approaches, methods and tools for CS implementation and organisational change management;
2. Analyse how companies embed sustainability into their business strategy and operations;
3. Recognise barriers to change and strategies adopted to overcome them;
4. Critically evaluate the implementation of CS within firms and develop appropriate recommendations on how to improve CS practices and organisational change management processes;
5. Work collaboratively and collegially with peers.

The course is structured around key topics for companies to align their strategies and manage their contribution to sustainability. For each topic, in the (guest)lectures and tutorials we will examine a variety of approaches and practical tools that support the integration of sustainability principles into the strategic and operational activities of firms, as well as the approaches and strategies that can be adopted to implement change and overcome resistance to change.

  • Sustainability: the next challenge for organisational change management
  • Change models
  • Drivers and barriers to change for sustainability
