Course goals
After completion of the course, you are able to:
- Place theories of transition and innovation within the wider transformation discourse;
- Understand and critically reflect upon key theories that explain the role of governance, and the dynamics of change and inertia of socio-economic and social-ecological systems in relation to sustainability and sustainable innovations;
- Assess the role of civil society initiatives and business actors in addressing some of the major global sustainability challenges of our time;
- Apply critical thinking and academic reading skills in the engagement with up-to-date scientific literature
- Self-organize world-café as a creative method of exchange, learning and reflection.
Content
The course ‘Governance and Sustainability Transitions’ focuses on how different kinds of actors, such as grassroots initiatives, social-movements and businesses, can contribute to innovation and transformation processes towards more sustainability in the systems they operate in. The course provides an overview of the quickly evolving transformation and transitions discourse, and discusses the role of governance, innovation and diverse actors in such processes. Moreover, the course aims to train students in critical thinking skills and will further improve their academic reading skills. Moreover, the course is student-centered and encourages teamwork, as students take responsibility for self-organizing weekly world-cafés to deepen their understanding of the readings.
