Please note that this course has a maximum capacity of 70 students
Participation is only possible for registered students. 

In case of oversubscription, students will be admitted in the following order:
  1. Students of the master programme Spatial Planning (SP)
  2. Students of master programmes Human Geography &Spatial Planning. They will be admitted by drawing of lots.

In this course, you will learn how to critically reflect from different theoretical perspectives on the role of governance in managing complex spatial projects. In addition, you will learn how to deal with dilemmas and conflicts regarding governance networks in spatial planning practice from an urban governance perspective.

In particular, the following course objectives will be assessed:
  • You will learn to critically reflect upon dilemmas and conflicts in academic and societal debates related to the differentiated and complex nature of governance networks in spatial planning;
  • You will gain skills enabling you to collectively design and communicate spatial planning projects to address complex spatial challenges in practice.

Content

This course builds on the theoretical and methodological knowledge from your Bachelor curriculum or pre-Master programme and in several Masters courses, including Beyond Planning Theory, Planning for Sustainable Cities and the Graduate Planning Studio. In this course, the role of governance as a key idea in spatial planning is at the centre of attention. The course introduces central themes and debates related to urban governance, as well as different theoretical paradigms to understand the concept of urban governance. In the course, various dilemmas and conflicts related to governance will be highlighted, in addition the related implications for spatial planning practice. Students will explore case studies from a range of perspectives illustrating the complexity related to urban governance. The course materials and assignments are linked to understanding core debates in urban governance and the relevance for spatial planning.
