Advanced Research Methodology for Spatial Planning
Beschrijving
Course goals
1. Distinguish the main theoretical approaches to research in the spatial planning domain
2. Understand the relation between theory, methodology and research design.
3. Distinguish and apply types of qualitative and quantitative research methods
4. Reflect critically upon the use and interpretation of the discussed methods
5. Demonstrate a critical attitude to planning research methods
6. Produce a research proposal using qualitative or quantitative research methods
Content
Following the course objectives, this course is structured in three different teaching blocks. First, the theoretical approaches of doing research and the relations between theory, choice of methods and research design will be discussed. Secondly, the backgrounds and practicalities of doing research is discussed. In this block the most common research methods in spatial planning are discussed, with a strong focus on qualitative research. Traditional empirical research methods and techniques (interviewing, statistics) are combined with contemporary case study and situational analysis. And thirdly, we will focus on the analysis of data and writing a research proposal. In this block scientific argumentation is discussed.
In general students learn to use different methods anticipating on their own master thesis projects, focused on spatial planning research. This includes various in-class exercises and peer-feedback exercises. The examination is based on paired and individual assignments. The main assignment involves preparing a research proposal.Reviews0 reviews
