3. Can have developed in-depth knowledge of at least one of these core fields through an in-depth engagement with a monograph in global urban transformations that they can analyse
4. Have knowledge of the genre of book review, and are able to create one themselves.

Content

In Key Thinkers in Global Urban Transformations we are going to engage with "the classics". The goal is that everybody will identify, read, contextualize and share knowledge about a classic monograph about Global Urban Transformations that is relevant to the individual's dissertation project. Before we get there, we spend several weeks problematizing the notion of "classics" (who defines what is a classic?), talk about the dynamics of a "discipline and literature", and do a bird's eye history of the main currents of the last 75 years of developments in urban theory. Every student will then present "their classic" in a 15 minute presentation and an academic book review. A key goal of the course is to become acquainted with this particular genre of academic communication.  The workshops are scheduled as interactive sessions. One is to analyse existing book reviews and identify their strengths and weaknesses. The other facilitates a debate about canonical thinking in disciplinary history.
