Course goals
Please note: the information in the course manual is binding.
Advanced Physical Hydrology provides the theory and physical principles behind the terrestrial hydrological cycle across a range of scales. Using mathematical descriptions of governing processes and modelling concepts, the course focuses on the various components of the hydrological cycle, including the interaction of land, vegetation and atmosphere, water in soils and groundwater, surface water flow and the response of catchments to weather, climate and human interference.
Once completed, the student:
Once completed, the student:
- Has obtained expertise in the field of understanding / quantifying / modelling of key underlying processes of the hydrological cycle;
- Has obtained the ability to integrate / interpolate / extrapolate (incomplete) knowledge at a high level, including information gathered from research-articles;
- Is able to think / develop / apply (partly) original ideas in a (semi) research context;
- Demonstrates skills for pursuing an original research question in a hydrological (sub) field.
Content
The course covers the following topics:
- Water in the atmosphere, precipitation and evaporation;
- Transpiration and interception by vegetation, infiltration and water flow in soils;
- Groundwater flow in aquifers and hillslopes;
- Surface water flow, hydrodynamic and hydrological routing methods;
- Spatial and temporal scales in hydrological process descriptions;
- Modelling catchment response to weather, climate or land use change
- Hydrological modelling of the catchment response to weather, climate or land use change using lumped and spatially distributed models.
