Course goals

Please note: the information in the course manual is binding.

The aims of this course are as follows:

· obtain insight in the water quality aspects of water management

· obtain quantitative insight in the hydrochemical, ecological and microbial processes that determine the chemical and biological water quality for combinations of anthropogenic activities and geographical settings

· obtain insight in the typical hydrochemical and microbial behaviour of several types of pollutants (nutrients, trace metals, PFAS, pathogenic bacteria, etc.)

· obtain insight in the relationships between - natural or not - water systems (as rivers, groundwater, etc.) and man-controlled water infrastructure (for drinking water supply, etc.) with respect to the water quality aspects

Content

Many kinds of water quality issues exist world-wide. Some of them refer to natural phenomena as too high arsenic concentration in groundwater in Bangladesh. Others refer to agricultural, industrial and other kinds of pollution: pesticides, nutrients, PFAS, etc. The natural processes that determine the water quality also play an important role as reference situation or as buffering and attenuating mechanisms for the pollutants.

The overarching aim of this course is to provide students fundamental insight in water quality. The different types of water quality will be addressed: chemical, physical, ecological and microbial quality. A quantitative approach is followed to reach this aim by means of tutorials and an assignment. Different kinds of hydrochemical processes are taught with illustrative environmental examples. An introduction to ecological water quality will be provided, where attention is paid to the full suite from primary production to fish. This is followed by an assignment in which a data set of water analyses will become interpreted. Drinking water and sanitation will be covered in a series of workshops or by means of other active teaching methods.
