Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Identify the key components of the global and regional water cycle and their relevance for water resources sustainability.
2. Understand the concept of climate adaptation and how its overarching policy context steers contemporary water management.
3. Understand governance, legal, and natural water science perspectives to advance water management for climate adaptation.
4. Acquire an overview of the main methodologies and solutions used in sustainable water resources management.
5. Identify and evaluate complex societal challenges in water management.

Content

The sustainability of water resources is a critical issue for the 21^st century. Water resources are affected not only by changes in climate but also by population growth, economic growth, management (technological, infrastructure, legal, and political), and other socioeconomic factors. This course concerns with providing students with a fundamental understanding of key catchment functions and hydrological processes in natural and built environments. Students will then use this understanding to explore various sustainable strategies for water resources management in the context of climate adaptation. Students will develop the ability to think critically and to use basic quantitative skills and management methodologies to answer questions related to sustainable water resources management.

This course combines natural science and governance/legal aspects in a thematic approach focused on water safety, water quality, drought, and climate adaptation solutions.

Problem- and challenge-based learning, along with case studies, will be utilised throughout the course to dissect, identify and understand the contemporary issues faced by water practitioners. Sustainability issues in water management, in both developing and developed economies, will also be explored.
