After successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Write a personal development plan.
- Describe and understand the basics of the geo-information process, including the role of data modelling.
- Understand the principles of data acquisition (including an introduction in Remote Sensing), data storage, data analysis, and visualization technologies.
- Understand the basics of quality issues of geo-information.
- Understand how Machine Learning works and for which Geo-related tasks it can be used.
- Apply basic methods in handling geo-information using the ArcGIS software and Python programming.
- Analyse basic problems, decide on solutions and summarize findings in a in technical report.

Content

Profile
  • The course is meant as introduction of in-depth contents of geo-information and serves as the basic methods and techniques for all other modules.
  • Module 5 will enhance the knowledge with respect to database technology and data analysis.
Contents
This module focuses on the technological aspects of geo-information management. The geo-information process can be split up into four main aspects:
  1. data acquisition including Remote Sensing,
  2. data storage,
  3. data manipulation and analysis, and
  4. visualization.
In addition to the geo-information management process, this module introduces two important technical skills: programming and machine learning. It is important to build a basic understanding of how programming and machine learning are applied within the geo-domain, as both topics will be deepened in Module 5.
Alongside the conceptual foundations, this module also provides an introduction to essential software tools, specifically ArcGIS. By the end of Module 1, you are expected to be able to carry out basic tasks in data acquisition, storage, analysis, and visualization. These practical skills will be further developed in Module 2.

Entry requirements
  • Understanding of Geo-Information Science terminology
  • Preferably also basic level of GIS skills
  • Basic academic skills
