Course goals
This course aims to increase your understanding of both the legal basics of human rights and the interaction with the political and practical context of societies facing armed conflict.Content
Human rights and conflict are interlinked in multiple ways. This course is geared towards exploring the nexus between the two with a focus on international law. It will do so by providing an introduction into the basics of human rights law and their interlinkages to situations before, during, and after armed conflict. The course examines international human rights protection systems and mechanisms, the relationship between international humanitarian law and human rights law, and legal debates on the use of force, including humanitarian interventions and the role of peace operations. It explores a wide range of issues, including for example the Women, Peace and Security agenda and transitional justice in the aftermath of conflict. In each case the aim is to understand both the legal basics and the interaction with the political and practical context of societies facing armed conflict.
This course is for students in the MA Conflict Studies and Human Rights; students from other M.A. programmes can only enroll with consent of the programme coordinator.
