Course goals

This course focuses on different types of interventions, policies and actions that aim to resolve or end intractable conflict in the period after the Cold War until the present. It seeks to improve your understanding of
- the different types of policies and interventions in the field of peace and security
- the underlying assumptions on peace and security
- the political contexts in which interventions and policies take place
- the key debates about these interventions and policies
- the different ways to analyse these interventions and policies, using different analytical lenses, including more traditional approaches (policy cycle), rational choice approaches, and interpretative approaches. 

Content

This course deals with different forms of policy, public action and international intervention and ‘engineering’ in and on situations of virulent conflict and/or endemic violence. It pays attention to the main debates about the policies and interventions of international actors in conflict affected countries, and discusses different ways to analyse these policies.

This course is for students in the MA Conflict Studies and Human Rights; students from other M.A. programmes can only enroll with consent of the programme coordinator.
