Contemporary Themes in Conflict Studies

Course goals

This course aims to deepen your theoretical and empirical knowledge within the field of Conflict Studies and Human Rights by focusing on a particular theme.
 
In addition, the course aims

• To make you familiar with and improve your capacity to critically reflect on key texts, analytical frameworks and methodologies related to the key theme of the course;
• To improve your skills in analysing violent conflict through 'conflict mapping' and 'conflict caseing';
• To improve your ability to present knowledge and insights in a coherent and convincing manner to an audience of specialists and non-specialists alike by written and oral communication means.

Content

This course builds on the broader foundations that you made yourself familiar with during the courses of block 1 (in particular ‘Theories of Violent Conflict’ and ‘Peace, Security & Politics’). The course will deepen your knowledge and improve your analytical skills by zooming in on a specific theme that is key to the field of Conflict Studies and Human Rights. You will explore that theme in a small group (max. 20 students).
Each year we offer three different themes, in line with the expertise of the Conflict Studies lecturers. The themes will be presented to you at the start of the academic year. You will be asked to indicate your first/second/third choice for a theme and based on your preferences we will allocate you to a group.    

This course is for students in the MA Conflict Studies and Human Rights; students from other M.A. programmes can only enroll with consent of the programme coordinator.
