Content

The Research Lab is one of the tracks that students of the MA Conflict Studies and Human Rights can choose from. All tracks combine a practice part in term 3 (internship, fieldwork, or research lab) with a thesis in term 4.

In a Research Lab a group of students works together in a research project, which is organized and led by a staff member. Students contribute to a new or existing research project and cooperate closely with other students that participate in the Lab. A Lab is led by a staff member of the MA program who will also act as thesis supervisor in term 4. Labs can be me more ‘academic’ when they are closely linked to the academic research or field of the principal researcher (and supervisor), or be more ‘applied’ when the supervisor develops a Lab with a societal partner (e.g. an NGO or think tank). In all Research Labs students work in a team on a collective product (for example a report, a podcast, a clip, etc.). They will meet on  a regular basis to discuss the progress of the project.  A Research Lab lasts 10 weeks (term 3), full time. You are expected to be available for the Lab 5 days per week. There will be regular meetings on location.

The number of Labs and themes of Labs differ from year to year, depending on the availability of staff and societal partners to organize Labs. In the course of September students of the MA CS&HR are informed about the Labs that are offered. In the second half of October the staff that organizes a Lab will explain more about the Lab and the possibilities to link your thesis to the Lab. If you want to join a Lab, you should also indicate this in the form. We cannot guarantee a place in a Lab. In case the number of interested students exceeds the number of places available we will decide by lot. In case the minimum number of students of the Lab is not met, the Lab may be cancelled.
When you have been accepted for the Lab, the Lab coordinator will register you for the Lab in Osiris. Thereafter it is no longer possible to change to an internship or fieldwork.

This course is for students in the MA Conflict Studies and Human Rights; students from other M.A. programmes can only enroll with consent of the programme coordinator.
