Course goals

At the end of this course, successful participants will be able to:
  1. translate an Old Irish text of moderate difficulty;
  2. answer questions regarding Old Irish grammar;
  3. answer questions about different genres of medieval Irish literature treated during class;
  4. write a research paper based on a primary-language text, on a topic relevant to the themes of the course, and chosen by the student;
  5. use their proficiency in Old Irish for subsequent course work in the RMA programme, including Paleogeography, research apprenticeships, and the RMA thesis.

Content

This course builds on the knowledge of Old Irish acquired in Block 1. It teaches students to translate Old Irish texts of different genres, both prose and poetry, and it addresses concepts such as rhyme, meter and ornamentation. Further, information on literary genres and analysis is presented. The student rounds off the course by writing a research paper on a topic chosen by them, reflecting their mastery of the Early Irish language and literature within the context of the current academic landscape.

The ability to read and analyse texts in Old Irish is an advanced academic skill that is crucial for conducting research in the field of Medieval Insular Studies, as well as related fields that engage with the history, literature and languages of the North Sea Area. Advanced skills in this domain provide a strong foundation for research apprenticeships and RMA thesis work and are a key asset when pursuing a PhD position upon graduation.

Old Irish II is one of the options for fulfilling the core curriculum requirement Reading and Interpreting Sources. It is designed for students of the North Sea Area track whose research interests lie in Medieval Ireland and who have proficiency in Old Irish equivalent to what would be obtained by passing Old Irish I. It is also appropriate for students in other tracks of the Ancient, Medieval or Renaissance tracks who wish to pursue research related to the North Sea Area.

Note that this course is offered simultaneously at BA- and RMA-level. While learning the language and its literature is a shared course goal for students in both groups, the overriding aim for RMA students is to train them – in tandem with the RMA courses Old Irish I, Paleography, and Theoretical Approaches - to do independent academic research on texts composed in Old Irish. This translates to significant differences in other course goals, in testing, and in class preparation and attendance.

Additional information

This course is for students that are enrolled in the RMA Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Studies; students from other RMA programmes can only enroll with consent of the programme coordinator and Board of Examiners.
