Course goals
The focus of this course is on the practical use of tools and techniques that enable students to explore and analyze qualitative and quantitative historical data. The classes are a mixture of hands-on ‘labs’ and collective discussions about the use and implications of different methods.
Content
This course consists of hands-on modules, which provide students with a space for experimentation with a specific research method – like comparative history, microhistory, or the quantitative analysis of numerical or textual data – to study their own research questions. Students will follow two such modules (out of four offered) in this course. The course starts and ends with plenary classes that engage with the concept of method – and with specific methods – in historical research from a metaperspective through readings, in-class discussions, and small assignments.
