Course goals

The research apprenticeship is an opportunity for students to delve deeper into the sub-discipline of their choosing and, more specifically, into an area of expertise that they may ultimately wish to pursue in their own research. During the research apprenticeship, our students are paired with an expert in a field that they find particularly interesting. Together, the student and teacher select and explore a topic that they find inspiring. The apprenticeship has three distinctive goals: to deepen students’ understanding of the historiography on a topic of their interest, to aid students in the development of their own line of research, and to benefit from the mentorship of an experienced scholar.

Content

Students begin by delving into the historiography on a topic of their choosing, followed by an exploratory analysis using primary sources. While most of the course involves meetings between the student and mentor, students come together to share their findings during a final plenary symposium.
