Course goals

  • Acquiring knowledge and insight into curatorial practices, heritage presentation, collection display
  • Acquiring knowledge and insight into curatorial theory, exhibition history and theory, theoretical and critical ideas on heritage presentation and collection display.
  • Learning to analyze case studies related to the course topic and develop opinions on the subject.
  • Learning to use exhibition history and curatorial theory as a frame of reference.
  • To be able to identify and analyze the educational and public-oriented character of exhibitions and collection displays
  • Acquire field and institutional knowledge
  • Deepening methodological insight, academic, communication and presentational skills and competencies.
  • Learning to communicate with professionals in the curatorial, museum and heritage field.
  • Learning to critically select and present material.

Content

'Curating the art exhibition: past, present and future'  explores historical and contemporary exhibition and collection presentation practices. It deals with aspects such as decolonizing and exhibiting heritage, transcultural exhibiting; transhistorical presentations, inclusion, difference and participation, exhibition history, collection presentations in the past and today, education and mediation… Students are brought into contact with museums and art institutions at the forefront of current curatorial, collection and exhibitionary practices. The course is mainly thought through excursions and contact with curators and museum and collection conservators.
