Course goals

To further develop your research skills. You should be able to analyse current debates, to formulate an historical problem as well as a workable research question, to find the proper primary sources and to analyse these to answer the research question in a convincing way. And to present the results of the research convincingly in an oral and a written form. 

Content

This course will focus on empire and conflict in premodern Afro-Eurasia. Topics may include the ideology and practice of empire; the cultural history of warfare; the modern reception of ancient and medieval military cultures; military Orientalism; religious conflicts; dispute settlement; or the significance of religion and rituals in peace and war.

The entrance requirements for Exchange Students will be checked by the International Office and the Programme coordinator. Acceptance is not self-evident.

This course is a compulsory choice within the Research MA Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Studies and is an elective for students in the following Research master programmes: Comparative Literary Studies; Art History; Nederlandse Literatuur en Cultuur; Musicology; Gender Studies; Media, Art And Performance Studies; Religious Studies; Philosophy; Modern and Contemporary History; Linguistics.
