Content

This course explores how premodern societies constructed, represented, and negotiated various societal and cultural boundaries, which created groups of insiders and outsiders. It allows students to examine a wide range of social, political, and cultural distinctions and the ways these functioned in different premodern historical contexts. Attention is given to the actors, ideas, and spaces involved in processes of inclusion and exclusion, as well as to the power relations embedded in them. Through the analysis of a set of primary sources, to be chosen by the students—mainly textual, but also visual, or material—the course investigates how such constellations can be studied and how categories of belonging and otherness were communicated and transformed over time
