Course goals

In this course you are introduced to writing a research paper on the basis of original research into some aspect of the primary sources that was the central theme in block 1. Participants will write a substantial piece (8.000 - 10.000 words), for which they are free to propose their own research question and angle. All aspects of writing a long essay will get attention, as will questions such as 'how do you formulate a working research question', 'how do you construct a valid historical argument', 'what counts as evidence in historical research'. The course is also intended to practice these skills before you tackle your RMA-thesis - this is the place where you learn how to do that.

Note that this course is only available to those who successfully finished the Medieval Studies research seminar in block 1.

Content

During the research seminar you are acquainted with the methods developed in the discipline of Medieval History, with attention to the uses of sources and the debates current among scholars internationally. This is accomplished by the in-depth study of a topic, decided upon in advance.

Additional information

This is Research Seminar 2 of the Medieval Studies Track (RMA AMRS).

The entrance requirements for Exchange Students will be checked by the International Office and the Programme coordinator. Acceptance is not self-evident.
