Internship Surgery IIObjectives and content
In the internships of master year 1 and 2 discipline-bound deepening and intensification of content takes center stage. The learning outcomes for the internships of the bachelor phase apply to the internships in master year 1 and 2 as well, but on a higher level:
- Learning to work ‘independently’ while taking some responsibility
- Greater mastery of discipline-related content
Work formats and weekly schedule
The internship takes six weeks fulltime and depending on the internship placement, is alternately spent in the outpatient ward, emergency ward and clinic. A professional training day takes place once a week (on Friday) for discipline-bound training and Conceptual Reasoning in Medicine.
Professional training days
Strictly speaking, a part of the education taking place on the professional training days is part of the internship itself. The other part is Conceptual Reasoning in Medicine which is an independent longitudinal programme running parallel to the internships.
Programme professional training days:
- Six professional training days: each Friday from 10 am.
- Mornings: Discipline-bound education Surgical topics
- Afternoons: Conceptual Reasoning in Medicine (see the CRM course materials)
The following topics are alternately covered during the Discipline-Bound training (general overview):
- Vascular surgery: AAA’s, carotis/extracranial vascular surgery
- Plastic surgery: closure of wounds: from primary via skin transplantation to free flap, burns, hand surgery and possibly mamma-surgical aesthetic/reconstructive
- Urology: Oncological ailments of bladder and prostate, fertility, gynaecology, nephrology, geriatric; in consultation with the students
- Orthopaedics: examination of locomotor system, arthroscopy, research/lab
- General: treatment of wounds, fractures, acute abdomen, thorax injuries
- Mouth diseases / surgery: Oral / Maxillofacial surgery
· Deepening of knowledge of surgical syndromes
· ‘Clinical reasoning’ (DD, examination plan, interpretation of results, indication for surgery (or lack thereof!), therapeutic plan)
· Handling directives / literature
Going abroad
In consultation with the (programme)coordinator/examiner, the supervisor and the International Office it is possible to conduct the internship Surgery II abroad.
Course materials
The Manual ‘Internship Surgery II’ contains a wealth of information about the organisation and content of the internship and the internship placements. The Manual and the Portfolio Module are available from Willy’s Winkeltje. For teachers, a teacher manual is available from the secretariat of the internship in the UMC Utrecht. This reader contains general information regarding the internships CRU as well as the Blueprint 2001.
