LINK purple is an integrated clerkship which contains anesthesia, surgery and internal medicine. LINK purple is situated in the 2nd year of the master and lasts 12 weeks. For the duration of this clerkship, a clinical rotation is followed in one of seven participating regional hospitals within the Training & Education region Utrecht.

LINK purple is preceded by a preparatory course of six weeks. During the LINK there are two days in which the students receive coaching lessons by the PLO-CA department and lessons in ‘Quality, Patient safety and Medical Leadership’ (KPML), Pharmacology, and Academic Skills. Furthermore, one day contains the activities for ‘Patient panel & Mentoring’.

The estimated number of contact hours is around 40 hours per week.

Course goals
LINK purple focuses on clinical patients and acute situations. The students will acquire knowledge, skills and understanding to investigate and interpret the signs and symptoms of a patient, apply additional investigations and establish a differential diagnosis and a treatment plan based on the results. The student works in LINK purple under increasing autonomy and responsibility.

In LINK purple the student follows a patient “track”. The students do not follow one individual patient, but pass through various components of the hospital such as a patient might do. The student will participate in different outdoor departments, clinical departments, the operating theatre and the emergency department, where they take part of the internal, surgical and anesthetic team. Depending on the hospital there will be the opportunity to work at the intensive care unit.

The "track" focusses on a particular area of interest, such as gastroenterology, vascular disease and oncology. The student will learn the  role of the various specialties and professions involved in the care of the patient. In each hospital several tracks can be arranged. The student will be assigned to one or more of these tracks which will help the student to become familiar with the structure of the clinical activities. It is preferred that assignments are in line with the specific track.
