Electives Master
In Master year 1 and 2 of CRU2006 two periods of 4 and 6 weeks respectively are reserved for electives (for most students both elective periods take place in year 2).
Pay attention! It is very important to consult the document “Regulations, criteria and procedures” of the elective periods in Master year 1 and 2. These can be found on Blackboard and on the website. Students have also received these documents per e-mail at the end of year 3 in the bachelor phase, together with an invitation to an important information sessions about this study unit.
Objectives and content
The objectives of the elective periods in Master year 1&2 are (amongst others):
To enable the student to explore the field(s) of his/her interest further
To stimulate the student to gain more in-depth knowledge
To introduce the student to the many aspects of clinical and/or scientific work
The electives are on the level of a Master year 1 & 2 student. An individual fulfillment of the elective periods is expected of the student, in consultation with a supervisor.
Work formats and weekly schedule
The elective periods can take different forms, like a first step in the direction of clinical research, an in-depth exploration of a specific field, an elective internship or an elective project outside of the UMC Utrecht (but related to the medical study) etc.
Periods
The student may choose to fill in the periods of 4 and 6 weeks separately or join them together in a continuous elective period of 10 weeks.
Assessment
Assessment is guided by several criteria, presented on a special assessment form. The criteria include: design and execution of the programme, a written (scientific) report or article by the student ánd an assessment interview with the (main) supervisor. In addition the professional behavior of the student is evaluated. The assessment is recorded by the supervisor on an assessment form designed for this purpose, which the student has received with the approval of the elective(s).
The student is responsible for having the elective project assessed by the supervisor and needs to make sure the assessment form is sent to the electives secretariat within 6 weeks after the termination of the elective period. Within this period the student also has to send the completed (up to E) application form and the report per e-mail to the secretariat (gnk.ma.keuze@umcutrecht.nl).
The examiner will usually endorse the assessment of the supervisor, but will only award study points after making sure the project result and the assessment are in line with the criteria and quality of the elective program and no plagiarism has been detected during a check.
