Course goals

Content and objectives
The patient perspective program aims to teach future doctors to practice health care in a way that it aligns with patients’ expectations and preferences. Students learn to communicate with patients and their family, to support patient’s self-management and to actively involve and collaborate with patients regarding decisions related to their health, while taking into account the patient’s preference for involvement.
This requires students to recognize the patients’ perspective on health and healthcare, to build partnerships with patients, to be able to provide tailored information and to have an in-depth knowledge of the care process. Reflection on own beliefs and behavior, and being receptive to feedback from patients and colleagues are important enablers.
The patient perspective program  comprises various educational interventions in which patients actively participate, in order to foster patient-centeredness amongst students.

Every academic year, the student makes assignments. These assignments are embedded in the courses or clerkships of the medical curriculum. The assignments are discussed during small group teaching sessions or individually by the clerkship supervisor. Furthermore, the student follows patient lectures.

Curriculum
The patient perspective program is a longitudinal course, from Bachelor year 3 to Master year 3.

Assessment
Students pass when they complete the assignments sufficiently and attend the mandatory teaching sessions.
Students fail when they did not complete the assignments, insufficiently completed the assignments or did not attend the mandatory teaching sessions.
