Objectives and content
The scientific research internship takes 12, 18 or 24 weeks and is aimed at active participation in scientific (bio)medical research and is distinct from other internships. The scientific research can be combined with the advanced clinical internship in a core discipline (ASAS) to a combination internship of 24 weeks. The scientific research internship can be offered by any hospital or (bio)medical research institute in the Netherlands or abroad, provided that following prerequisites are met: responsibility of supervision at the host institute is delegated to a staff member holding a doctorate (MD/PhD or PhD), while a staff member of UMC Utrecht (MD/PhD or PhD) serves as formal supervisor. The student designs a research plan in consultation with the internship supervisor. This plan must be approved by the coordinator of the scientific research internship before final registration takes place.
The competences during and at the end of the scientific internship will be assessed in the relevant areas and are recorded in the portfolio. Assessment requires amongst others a report written in English language and a presentation delivered to a (bio)medical audience. The detailed and updated guidelines for the scientific research internship are provided in the document 'CRU wetenschapsstages; Richtlijnen, Criteria en Procedures' on the 'Schakeljaar' website.
The internship application is written on the requisite form by student under guidance of the supervisor. Upon approval of supervisor, student sends the completed form (including a title of the project and the start and finish dates) digitally via Scorion at least 8 weeks in advance of the internship. Within 6 weeks after completion of the internship, digital versions of the report and presentation together with the completed assessment forms signed by the formal supervisor and independent 2nd reviewer should be digitally delivered via Scorion.
