Elective Student Teaching Rotation and Student Teaching Qualification
 
Objectives and content
 
The Student Teaching Rotation contributes to the CanMEDS competency domain of “Scholar”. At the end of this rotation the student has achieved the following learning outcomes:
 
Content-specific competence
           Mastery of the content covered in the educational unit where the student has been placed;
-          Knowledge about the position of the educational unit within the curriculum in which the student has taught
 
 General didactics
-          Knowledge of the educational principles of the curriculum;
-          Knowledge of the principles of working with small groups, and skill to apply these;
-          Ability to motivate junior students to exert study effort and attain academic achievements;
 
 Designing education
-          Ability to design at least one form of contact education under supervision of an experienced teacher in a meaningful manner;
-          Ability to adequately prepare at least one form of contact education under supervision of an experienced teacher and awareness of the necessity
              of preparation;
-          Ability to provide meaningful and focused feedback to the coordinator of an educational unit
 
 Execution of education and of formative and summative assessment
-          Ability to adequately execute at least one form of contact education under supervision of an experienced teacher;
-          Ability to estimate the prior knowledge of a student;
-          Ability to provide meaningful, focused feedback to students;
-          Ability to assess students’ non-written performance in the educational unit concerned
-          Ability to design test questions of sufficient quality
 
General skills and attitude
-          Receptiveness for feedback regarding one’s own educational performance, ability to adjust this accordingly if necessary and the intention and ability to acquire sufficient knowledge and insight in the subject fields covered within the theme or skills of the teaching.
 
Work formats
During the teaching rotation the intern is allocated to an educational unit (in consultation with its coordinator) and acts as a teacher during at least four weeks, the equivalent of at least 20 hours. The student will independently take care of contact education. To obtain a Student-teaching qualification the student must have taught a minimum of 30 hours of contact education independently. Half of the rotation time will be devoted to the didactical and content-related preparation and execution of education. The remaining time is devoted to:
-          self-study;
-          group supervision with fellow-interns and peer-supervision;
-          preparation of feedback for the coordinator of a study unit about the set-up of the education;
-          execution of an educational advisory project for a study unit;
-          writing a literature report about a medical education topic of choice;
-          designing test questions;
-          Making, editing and reviewing a video recording of the own teaching performance
   
Total contact hours: about 10, excluding the 30 teaching hours and incidental contacts with supervising teacher of the module or het rotation supervisor

Assessment and practical requirements
All internship activities are mandatory. An overview will be kept in the portfolio of the accomplished activities, Also the assessment of the supervising teachers is part of the portfolio. A quiz on the literature will also take place.
Students who meet all requirements, including 30 hours of teaching  receive a Student-Teaching Qualification certificate.
The student must have given at least 30 contact hours teaching itself. Then they can qualify for a “student-teaching qualification (StOK)”. Previously given hours can be included (for example as a student assistant; If the student has given a maximum of 20 hours, the student meets the requirement of the the teaching rotation without StOK certificate.
