Objectives and content

The general objective of the professional training days is to learn to integrate the various ingredients of clinical practice with competencies regarding professional conduct, didactics and education and with the use of data from (bio)medical scientific research, building upon the modules from the Professional training course at the start of the final year.

Above all the professional training days have the objective of integrating the development of a professional attitude towards the correct use and transfer of knowledge and skills for the benefit of quality and effect of medical care. To this end consolidation assignments and discussion sessions are employed.

During the professional training days assignments will be given with the objective of broadening and deepening the knowledge and skills acquired in the professional training course, to be executed individually or in pairs.

In the module Evidence based medicine (EBM) solving clinical problems according to the methods of EBM, with application of knowledge from clinical scientific research, takes center stage. The objective here is to optimize diagnostics, prognostics and treatment according to the method of scientifically-founded conduct in medical practice.

The focus of the module Professionalism are the social and personal aspects of the professional practice of a physician. More specifically, in preparation for the medical professional conduct, the development of attitude and legal, medical-ethical and social aspects of medicine are covered. To stimulate the (further) acquisition of competencies in the areas of  professionalism, social conduct and communication the student will discuss and reflect on various social, ethical and organizational aspects of medical through discussions and written reports.

Work formats

Students follow eight professional training days during master year 3, in connection to the professional training course. The assignments of the module Evidence based medicine are executed independently in addition to the continuous contact-training of the module professionalism. The work formats of the module professionalism are interactive lectures and discussion assignments in work groups. With regard to the module Evidence based medicine, the opportunity is offered during every professional training day to ask questions and discuss topics raised during the execution of the EBM assignments during a plenary interactive Meet The Expert session. An important part of the course load consists of self-study in preparation to the work groups and presentations.  

Place within the curriculum

The module Evidence based medicine and the module Professionalism of the professional training days form a unit with the corresponding modules of the Professional training course at the start of master year 3.

Literature

Previously acquired books and literature are used as well as articles which the student needs to retrieve from the internet. Specific information on the literature can be found in the course manual and on Blackboard.

Course materials
Apart from the literature mentioned above, relevant course manuals from previous courses are also used. Information on all materials can be found on Blackboard and in the course manual.
 
Assessment
Both modules need to be completed with a sufficient record.
