Respiratory System

Objectives and content
  • To build on existing knowledge of respiratory physiology to gain insight into the pathophysiological changes at the root of respiratory conditions (the upper and lower airways and the lungs).
  • To learn to diagnose and properly address common respiratory and ear, nose and throat conditions.
  • To learn to differentiate between life-threatening and chronic diseases of the respiratory system.
  • To recognize less common clinical pictures of the respiratory system in order to avoid therapeutic delays.

Work formats
The course consists of weekly interactive work sessions Students are expected to devote a significant amount of time to independent self-study. The course handbook lists the material required to be studied prior to each meeting. Students' understanding of the material is further developed and expanded on during each session.

A pathology laboratory session corresponding to the material covered and a spirometry course are embedded into the course. The radiology education also continues parallel to the course.

Place within the curriculum:
Respiratory System takes place during weeks 26 through 30 of year 1 (weeks 9-13 of the year).

Assessment
A written/digital test takes place twice a year (one regular test and a repeat).
