The  Nephrology Course has a Regular and a Technical Version

Objectives and content
Students are assumed to have basic knowledge of renal and urinary physiology. The main objectives of this course are to gain insight into pathophysiological changes underlying diseases of the renal system, and into the symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatments of renal diseases as necessary for basic medical practice.

Besides the core content, the material is augmented by discussions related to recent medical developments. The focus of the medical developments differs between the two versions of the course:
 

• Biomedical (according to the regular version of the course)
• Technical (according to the technical version of the course)

Work formats
The course consists of interactive lectures, weekly “meet the expert” sessions and a laboratory session.

A strong emphasis is placed on self-study (ICT) based on the “Flipping the Classroom” model.
The course manual outlines the literature required to be studied before and discussed during each contact-session with the professor.

Radiology education continues parallel to the course. The material covered during the radiology course corresponds to the material covered in the  Nephrology course where possible.  

Place within the curriculum
Nephrology takes place in weeks 37 to 40 of year 1 (calendar weeks 19 to 22).

Literature
The course is based on the following sources:
- Textbooks advised for the SUMMA admission exam
- Textbooks corresponding to “Knowledge” and “Science”

Assessment
A digital test takes place twice a year (one regular test and a repeat).
