Objectives and Content

• To give students insight into the types of research performed within one of the six key strategy programs of the UMC Utrecht
• To expose students to different types of research and thereby facilitate a choice for a research topic which he/she finds personally interesting (for OP interships)
• To introduce the student with recent research in the UMC Utrecht and allow the students to participate in a journal club that will be moderated by a UMC Utrecht researcher.
• To further develop English writing and presenting skills
• To learn about Evidence Based Medicine and apply it
• To discuss fraud and plagiarism
• To discuss Science in Transition
• To get insight in the organization of the scientific community and its challenges
• To hone academic skills

Course format and weekly schedule
Seventeen 1-3 hour instructor supervised sessions take place during the course of the entire first year. Additionally, there is a strong self-study component and students are given  a writing assignment.

Place within the curriculum
The course starts at week 2 (calendar week 38) of year 1. 

Assessment:
Graded Essay, Journal Club presentation, and Clinical Dilemma (equal weights; final grade 0-10).
