Scientific Education – Research Methodology

Objectives and Content
- To build a foundation of knowledge of the background and methods necessary for the Research Internships (OP) II and III, with emphasis on the methods used for human research.
- The learn about the architecture of human research, in order to gain insight into different research areas in the medical field (etiology, diagnostic, prognostic, and intervention), and into the process of how a research question can be translated into a study design in each of these areas.
- To gain insight into the methods used to analyze the results of human research.
- To learn to critically read and interpret clinical scientific research

Work formats and weekly schedule
During 3 weeks, 5 web lectures are combined with 2 interactive lectures, 3 lectures, 2 computer labs, and 2 work sessions. Furthermore, working in groups of 4/5, students design a study to answer a self-formulated research question.

Place within the curriculum
Scientific Education – Research Methodology takes place during weeks 11 through 13 in year 2 (calendar weeks 47 through 49).

Assessment
The instruction is concluded with a final written-answer examination, with (methodological) questions testing the student's understanding and interpretation partly based on excerpts from articles from international scientific journals. There is one possibility to repeat the examination.
