Musculoskeletal Systems has a regular and a technical version.

Objectives and Course content
- The objective of the course is to impart solid basic knowledge concerning the orthopedic, rheumatologic and sports medicine-related aspects of the musculoskeletal system. Relevant pathology, histology and radiology are also discussed. 

Specific objectives are as follows:
- To build on existing knowledge and gain more insight into the physiology and pathophysiology of cartilage and bone.
- To acquire an understanding of the normal structure and function of the musculoskeletal system.  
- To address to processes of developmental biology, degeneration, and trauma associated with the musculoskeletal system.
- To gain insight into the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnostic methods, and treatment options of rheumatic ailments.

Besides the core content, the material is explored on deeper and broader levels with a 
- Biomedical focus for the regular version of the course
- Technical focus for the technical version of the course

Work formats and weekly schedule
The course consists of workgroups, "meet-the-expert" sessions, in-depth discussion- based lectures, laboratory sessions in pathology and radiology, and physical examination practice sessions. The lectures and workgroups are organized according to the ‘Flipping the Classroom’ model based on ICT self-study. 

Place within the curriculum:
The course musculoskeletal system takes place during weeks 11 through 15 of year 2 (weeks 46-50 of the year).

Literature
The digital course material is obtained from the University Utrecht web licenses, and from sources referred to on the general textbook list.

Assessment
A digital test takes place twice a year (one regular test and a repeat).
