Objectives and content
During the course students become acquainted with public health and the role of physicians in society.
A diverse number of topics are addressed, including: lifestyle and other determinants of health, disease prevention,  aspects of health law, child health, organization and finance of health care, environmental and occupational medicine and health differences between socio-economic classes, sex or ethnicity. 

Work formats and weekly schedule
Medicine and Society consists of two parts:
- 20 interactive lectures during years 1 and 2;
- one week of inter professional simulation as a preparation of the social medicine internship.

Students have to be present at least 80% of the lectures in years 1 and 2 in order to be allowed to do the final report and oral (presentation) exam.

Place within the curriculum
Medicine and society is part of the line “Knowledge” and takes place during the first two years of the SUMMA program.

Literature
Required textbook:
Burdorf A, Stronks K. Volksgezondheid en gezondheidszorg. Negende, geheel herziene druk. Houten: Bohn Stafleu van Loghum, 2021.

Assessment
There will be an report and oral final exam in groups at the end of the 20 lectures about all lectures given in years 1 and 2. You will apply the content of the lectures to a chosen target group. The inter professional simulation assessment is active participation and a reflection assignment.
