Objectives and Content

An introduction to Pediatrics through the practical application of Pediatrics under specialist supervision in an out-patient setting.
Students learn to develop and use patient examination skills, psycho-social communication skills, the ability to apply acquired knowledge of pathophysiological processes, and the rationale necessary to formulate treatment objectives, and decision-making methods common to the specialty. The gradual development of these skills allows the autonomy of the student to increase with each outpatient clinic.

Work formats and weekly schedule
During a period of 5 weeks, each group has one day per week allocated to the pediatric out-patient clinic.

The student initially observes the pediatrician perform the medical consultation and interact with the patient and the family. The students gradually take over parts of the medical consultation from the pediatrician (taking the medical history, performing and explaining the physical examination, diagnosing the patient, proposing a treatment course, and charting. The student remains under the supervision of the specialist, who provides feedback after every consult. Students subsequently chart in the patient’s health record and compose a letter to the provider who requested a consult.

Students also keep a record of the medical procedures they witnessed or conducted themselves.
