Objectives and content
Medical Clerkship Pediatrics builds upon the material of year 1 and 2.
The goals and expectations of the clerkship include:
 
- to gain knowledge of the issues and objectives associated with Pediatric Medicine, as described in Framework 2009
- the application of said knowledge of pediatric medicine while adapting an attitude conducive to a profession in pediatrics.
- to learn a number of skills, diagnostic methods, and treatment options specific for pediatrics.
- supervised and increasingly independent involvement in the of assessment and management of pediatric patients.
- involvement in the medical treatment of pediatric patients in the Emergency Department
- partaking in correspondence with the referring physician and medical history taking


Course format and weekly schedule

The four week medical clerkship Pediatrics takes place in the Gelre Hospitals in Apeldoorn. After the first introduction day, the medical student is expected to participate in the activities of the department and/or outpatient clinic and as independently as possible. The student consults patients, takes medical histories, performs and interprets physical examinations, and documents in the patient records. Furthermore, the student attends multidisciplinary conferences, follows regular instruction, works after-hours shifts, and witnesses procedures whereby (s)he is instructed in medical technical skills.

The clerkship takes place in year 3.
