Medical Clerkship Family Medicine (General Practice)

Objectives and content
Medical Clerkship Family Medicine builds upon the material of year 1 and 2.
The goals of the clerkship Family Medicine have been formulated by the Interdepartmental Conference of Family Medicine as follows :
"Via the clerkship Family Medicine the student becomes capable of - under supervision - to experience, think about, and gain insight into the attitudes a family practitioner needs in order to deal with the patients, patients' problems and ailments, and how these outcomes relate to living environments. Furthermore, students learn what it means to deal with the uncertainties encountered in family medicine. "
  
In practical terms, this means the following objectives can be distinguished:

• to gain insight into the problems, and patterns of morbidity seen in a family practice
• to skillfully and systematically conduct a patient consultation as a general practitioner; and to in particular learn systematical differentiation between medical problems and the chief complaint.
• to gain insight into interpersonal factors influencing  the nature of the doctor-patient relationship
• to gain insight into other forms of primary healthcare
• to learn the nature of cooperation and of referral possibilities within primary healthcare and between primary and secondary medical professionals.
• to place the upcoming physician in a position to make appropriate career choices
• to gain sufficient knowledge and insight into family medicine necessary for future cooperation with general practitioners
• to become increasingly and independently involved in the of assessment and management of patients

Course format and weekly schedule
The five week Medical Clerkship Family Medicine takes place in a general practitioner's office. In this period a "return morning" is scheduled twice or three times for the family medicine clerks. The program consists of: exchanging experiences, student presentations, and the choosing of a chairman by the Family Medicine instructor.

Place within the curriculum
The clerkship takes place in year 3, after all other clerkships have been completed.

Note:
The SUMMA clerkship is organized in the area of Apeldoorn.
