Objectives and content

Research Internship (RI) III follows Research Internship II, and focuses on the active participation in academic research.  The goal of RI-III is to accomplish the research proposed in RI-II. The student has a recognizable own input in the execution of the research, the analysis of the data and in the recording of the findings in an English-written report.


Work format and Weekly Schedule

Research internship, lasting 27 weeks, and conducted within a UMC Utrecht research group. Internships at other medical research institutes or hospitals in the Netherlands or abroad are possible, provided that 1) recognized expertise in the area of the proposed research is present, 2) a UMC Utrecht researcher acts as a formal supervisor and 3) approval from the coordinator of the SUMMA longitudinal program Science has been given. 

The objective of RI-III is the execution of the research project described in RI-II. Students commence their RI-III in SUMMA year 3 or 4 after approval of the RI-II research proposal by the Science coordinator of SUMMA.
 
The report may have the shape of a scientific manuscript (but the “article” does not need to be submitted to a journal). The report must provide a proper overview of all the work conducted during the RI-III internship. A short report about a part of the RI III is not sufficient.
During RI-III students will attend RI-III presentations of other students and they will present their own RI-III results after the completion of their project.  

Place within the curriculum

After RI-II, in year 3 or 4.

Assessment

The grade for RI-III is based on the practical execution of the research (40%; the final report, 20 % evaluation by RI-III supervisor and 20% evaluation by 2^nd independent reviewer; 20% final presentation. The final report is presented for approval to the coordinator.
