The Cardiovascular System Course has a regular and a technical Version
The last decades major advances have been made in the diagnostics and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Despite these advances cardiovascular pathology is still the leading cause of death worldwide. Therefore, training medical professionals (especially medical doctors) in this subject is of the utmost importance. This course is the first in this curriculum to fully cover this exciting topic!


Objectives and Content

• To build on existing physiological knowledge to gain insight into the changes associated with diseases of the cardiovascular system.
• To gain insight into the pathophysiological changes of the heart and blood vessels in order to understand the symptoms and diagnostic methods associated with diseases of the cardiovascular system.
• To use information gained from the medical history and physical examination in order to understand the medical problem and asses the need for further diagnostics.
• To be able to use the information gained from advanced diagnostic methods to establish a diagnosis, and subsequently outline the problem and the therapeutic options to the patient.
• Exciting new developments in cardiovascular medicine will be showcased in a series of engaging lectures

• Biomedical focus (for the regular version of the course)
• Technical focus (for the technical version of the course)

Work formats
In this course there is a strong emphasis on self-study. This is facilitated by literature and augmented by online knowledge clips and E-learnings. The acquired knowledge is built upon through the interactive educational sessions. A solid preparation is essential during this course. The course manual lists the material required to be studied prior to each meeting. This style of studying is known as “Flipping the Classroom” and has proven to be an effective method to obtain knowledge effectively. 

A pathology laboratory session corresponding to the material covered is part of the course. The radiology education is planned parallel to the course. Additional biomedical and technical lectures will be organized in which interesting recent developments in the cardiovascular field will be discussed.

Cardiovascular System takes place in weeks 13 t/m 18 of year 1.
