Course goals
After successfully passing the course, you will be able to:
1. Understand, design, and implement fundamental operating systems mechanisms.
2. Identify security vulnerabilities and evaluate their impact in simple settings.
3. Assess the tradeoffs of OS mechanisms and security mitigations.
Assessment
- Labs (40% of the final mark): O1, O2
- Exam (60%): O1, O2, O3
To pass the course, you must score at least 5 in each part.
You may repair the exam, if your final mark is between 4 and 5.5 or “AANV".
Content
This course gives an introduction to operating systems (OS) and computer security. In the course, we will learn fundamental OS mechanisms such as virtual memory, system calls, processes and threads, and how software bugs can lead to security vulnerabilities. The course will cover both the offensive and
defensive side of system security, so that by the end of the course, you will have the foundations necessary to reason about attacks and defenses.
You should be familiar with computer architecture and imperative programming.
The labs will give you hands-on experience with low-level, system programming in C and x86: you will implement memory allocators, thread schedulers, and exploit memory bugs.
Course form
Lectures and lab sessions. Attendance is strongly recommended.
