Data Science Colloquium
Beschrijving
Course goals
Once part 1 (project proposal) of the thesis has been completed (or is very close to completion), a colloquium needs to be implemented.
The aim of the colloquium is to train the students into presenting a research field, delivering presentations that disseminate knowledge and educate on a particular field.
Assessment
- presentation (75% of the final mark)
- evaluation (20%).
- documentation (5%)
If some material (e.g., some picture or some statement) needs to be included from research papers or other sources, the origin of the material needs to be explicitly referenced on the slide.
Prerequisites
Highly advisable to have completed most of the thesis proposal (part 1), but is not necessarily a requirement.
Content
The colloquium consists of a 30-minute presentation in the form of a tutorial on the general field of the topic of the student's thesis.
The presentation is aimed at introducing the audience to the thesis research area (what it is, why it is interesting, why it is challenging, etcetera), and present the related works that have been done in it.
Note that the related works presented in the colloquium do not require any additional research study since they are typically those included in thesis. Thesis proposal, but additional works may be included if deemed necessary.
The presentation should highlight not only what has been done in the field, but the challenges of these works, as well as the open challenges that remain.
It is important to note that the colloquium is about the research area of the thesis, and not about the specific research problem that the thesis will be about.
Course form
Individual research presentation, evaluation:each student is required to listen and provide an evaluation to at least 3 colloquia.
