Course goals

To develop skills on knowledge management using Semantic Web standards and tools, students will

  • understand the latest W3C standards for knowledge modeling
  • identify and apply tools and techniques for (automatic) knowledge graph and ontology construction
  • apply selected Semantic Web technologies to model real world problems
  • learn how to query knowledge graphs and ontologies
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the linked web of data
  • demonstrate understanding of common application vocabularies in use on the Semantic Web
  • use  common Semantic Web tools to design, implement, document, and verify ontologies
  • demonstrate understanding of symbolic and subsymbolic knowledge graph completion methods
Assessment
The grading in this course will be based on two components:
  • a group assignment (with your assigned group): 40% of the final grade
  • an individual exam: 60% of the final grade.
To pass the course, you need at least a 5.0 for the exam, at least a 4.0 for the project work, and at least a 5.5 in total.

To qualify for a repair of the final result the mark needs to be at least a 4, or “AANV”.

Content

The aim of this course is to introduce the technical foundations of Semantic Web Technologies, including knowledge representation, query languages, and logical inference.
More specifically, it covers the following topics:

  • vision and principles of the Semantic Web
  • representation languages (RDF, RDF Schema, OWL), knowledge modeling
  • knowledge graphs and ontologies
  • logical reasoning in RDF and OWL
  • querying knowledge graphs using SPARQL, the linked (open) data, and knowledge graph completion.

Course form
Each week there will be two lectures.
Monday’s - 11:00 – 12:45. Location: see your schedule in MyUU.
Wednesday’s - 11:00 – 12:45 (week 46 – 50) and 09:00 – 12:45 (week 51 – 4). Location: see your schedule in MyUU.

Lecture meetings:

  • We expect all students to be present at all the lectures
  • The slides for each lecture will be made available through Brightspace.
  • The lectures are highly interactive, for this reason, we ask you to actively participate by answering questions to stimulate interaction.
  • The lectures will not be recorded. Please note that it is not allowed to make your own recordings, nor to share the recordings that are made with others (for more information on UU guidelines, see https://www.uu.nl/sites/default/files/uuetiquette-online-onderwijs-eng.pdf).
